Emma Charlotte Duerre Watson - born Jacqueline Luesby to Chris Watson and Jacqueline Luesby, two British lawyers - was born July 8, 1989 in Paris. As a young girl, she relocated from London to Oxfordshire to attend The Dragon School. At the age of six, Emma realized she would like to be an actor and for many years she studied at the Oxford branch of Stagecoach Theatre Arts a part-time theater school, where she learned the art of acting and dancing. From the age of 10, she took part and played the leading role in numerous Stagecoach productions as well as school plays. Casting began in 1999 to cast Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone (2001) the film adaptation of British writer J.K. Rowling's bestselling novel. Emma was spotted by Emma's Oxford Theatre teacher. David Heyman told Emma along with Rupert Grint, Daniel Radcliffe that they had all been through eight consecutive auditions. The film's release Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (2001) was Emma's first cinematic screen appearance. The highest-grossing movie of 2001, the film set records in its first day revenue as well as opening weekend takings. Critics were impressed with the movie and its performances. The Daily Telegraph, a popular British publication, has praised Emma for her performance. Emma got five nominations in recognition of her exceptional performance. In the end, she received the Young Artist Award in Leading Young Actress in the Film.
